About AAMH

Asia-Australia Mental Health (AAMH) is a consortium of St Vincent's Health (St. Vincent's Mental Health) and The University of Melbourne (Department of Psychiatry and The Asialink Centre). Established in 2003, AAMH partners academic, government, health sector community and peak bodies in Asia and Australia to improve mental health services and outcomes in the Asia Pacific region.

The remarkable economic growth through the Asia Pacific often leads to improved physical health, but not necessarily improved mental health. Some argue that the effects of globalisation are actually adding to the fastest growing burden of disease for our time, that of mental illness. This is because the rapid social and economic change accompanying globalisation can lead to the breakdown of traditional social and family networks, putting extra pressure on families and individuals. AAMH believes this mental health challenge requires global solutions.

AAMH aims to be part of the global solution to this challenge. Our multi-national approach aims to transfer up-to-date mental health solutions to areas of need in a culturally appropriate manner.  Collaboration between colleagues from different cultures and perspectives provides the best hope for creative and constructive answers.

 

All AAMH programs contribute to the Melbourne WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health.
